Job Summary

The Recruitment and Retention Officer performs intermediate technical and administrative work coordinating and developing innovative and current approaches to the recruitment and retention of fire and EMS personnel; does related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Fire Chief.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develops and coordinates educational programs and curriculum designed to establish, reinforce, and increase community volunteerism behaviors and attitudes as it relates to the Fire and EMS Services.
  • Coordinates work with the Recruitment and Retention Committee to process new recruit applications; assists with and/or provides orientation training for new recruits.
  • Prepares, designs, and updates information on the Department’s website.
  • Presents recruitment and retention programs to both private and public groups including educational institutions, civic and religious groups, the elderly, and other special interest groups.
  • Prepares a quality retention program that addresses the needs of the diverse groups within the Department of Fire and Rescue.
  • Monitors programs and tracks data related to recruitment and retention of volunteers.
  • Maintains a current understanding of innovative approaches to recruit and retain volunteers.
  • Recommends and assists in the preparation of the department budget for supplies and equipment.
  • Researches, prepares, and solicits grant funding related to fire and EMS recruitment and retention.
  • Promotes and presents a positive, professional image of the Department of Fire and Rescue and the County of Shenandoah.

Education and Experience

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, three (3) years of experience in the recruitment of fire and rescue personnel, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Special Requirements

Ability to obtain a minimum of twelve (12) hours of training per calendar year in the field of fire and rescue recruitment and retention.

The annual starting pay for this FLSA non-exempt position is $38,007.09 - 43,708.15, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
